Racha Makarem: A Career Built Across Languages and Worlds

Some careers grow within one industry. Others evolve through different fields, countries, and opportunities. In many ways, Racha Makarem’s journey belongs to the second kind.

With nearly two decades of experience, she has built her career around translation, interpretation, editing, communication, and media. Throughout this journey, she has worked across Lebanon and the UAE, connecting languages with business, culture, media, and international communication.

Today, she is a Managing Partner at Sense Seven Delicacies and a Founding Partner at Four Pillar Communications. Alongside these roles, she continues to work across translation, interpretation, editing, and content creation.

Her academic background also reflects this professional direction. She holds a Master’s degree in Language Interpretation and Translation from Saint Joseph University of Beirut. From there, she developed a career that would take her from Lebanese media and production companies to major institutions and international events in the UAE.

From Beirut to the World of Media

Racha’s professional journey began in Beirut, where she entered the media and production industry.

In 2003, she joined Racti Art Production & Distribution as a Senior Translator. There, she worked on translation and dubbing services for international media networks.

Two years later, she moved to Medialink International as Head of Translation. In this role, she worked across translation, subtitling, and dubbing for national and international media networks.

Then, in 2006, she joined Image Production House as Head of the Translation Department. Once again, her work connected language with television and media production.

These early experiences gave her a strong foundation in translation and media. At the same time, they allowed her to develop the precision and flexibility required to work across different formats and audiences.

Racha Makarem and the Move to the UAE

In 2009, Racha moved to Abu Dhabi with her family. Soon after, she began an important new chapter as a Senior Translator and Editor at The National newspaper.

According to her LinkedIn profile, she worked there from April 2010 to May 2017. During that time, she worked on English and Arabic writing, translation, and editing.

Her responsibilities included articles, opinion pieces, press releases, and special editions. In addition, she also provided simultaneous interpretation.

The role expanded her experience beyond traditional translation. She worked with language while also engaging with journalism, current affairs, and different forms of professional communication.

Meanwhile, she continued working independently on translation, editing, content creation, and interpretation projects.

Her clients included multinational companies, digital platforms, government authorities, private authors, and local think tanks. As a result, her professional experience continued to grow across different sectors.

From Translation to International Interpretation

Over time, interpretation became another important part of Racha’s career.

She has worked as a simultaneous interpreter at numerous high-profile conferences and festivals in the UAE. Among them are the Knowledge Summit, the World Government Summit, the Abu Dhabi Film Festival, the International Festival of Falconry, and the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair.

Such work demands more than fluency.

It requires concentration, speed, accuracy, and the ability to understand meaning within seconds. At the same time, interpreters must remain aware of cultural references, professional terminology, and the wider context of a discussion.

Racha works fluently in Arabic, English, and French. In addition, she has conversational knowledge of Spanish.

This linguistic range has allowed her to move between different professional and cultural environments.

Her experience also extends beyond interpretation. She has contributed to research and translation projects for organizations such as the Tourism and Culture Authority, Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, and Deloitte.

Furthermore, her work has covered a wide range of professional and cultural subjects.

For Racha, language is therefore not simply about transferring words from one language to another. It is about preserving meaning, tone, context, and intent.

Building Four Pillar Communications

In 2016, Racha took another major step in her professional journey. She became a Founding Partner at Four Pillar Communications in the UAE.

The company operates as a boutique translation and communications agency serving the UAE and wider GCC markets. From the beginning, it brought together linguistic expertise with communication, editing, and content creation.

Its work includes translation, interpretation, editing, content creation, subtitling, and related communication services. The company has also delivered projects for government authorities, Big Four firms, and international organizations across the EMEA region.

Racha’s role reflects the experience she had built over the years. After working across media, translation, interpretation, and editing, she could bring these disciplines together within one professional environment.

Her work also involves leadership and management. She has developed experience in project management, people management, and communication.

In this way, her career moved beyond language services alone and into building teams, managing projects, and supporting clients.

Racha Makarem: A Career That Continues to Evolve

In recent years, Racha has expanded her entrepreneurial journey further.

She became a Managing Partner and General Manager at Sense Seven Delicacies in the UAE. Through this new venture, she entered another professional space while continuing to build on the skills she had developed throughout her career.

Although the industry differs from translation and communication, many of the skills remain relevant.

Business requires communication. Leadership requires listening. Partnerships require trust. Likewise, managing people and projects requires clarity, adaptability, and strong relationships.

Her journey demonstrates how experiences from one field can strengthen another.

A career that began in Lebanese media eventually moved into international journalism, translation, interpretation, communication, and entrepreneurship. Along the way, each chapter added another layer to her professional identity.

Today, her work sits at the intersection of language, communication, leadership, and business.

Yet, behind all these roles lies one consistent strength: her ability to connect.

She connects languages with ideas, cultures with communication, and professional expertise with human understanding.

Ultimately, Racha Makarem’s story is not simply about mastering languages.

It is about understanding what exists between them.

And that is where communication becomes more than words.
