Behind the Laughter: The Silent Suffering of Bullying.

An ordinary morning. An alarm clock rings. Then, that mechanical reflex to check your phone. But instead of welcome messages, the screen lights up with a torrent of contempt. This digital poison never stops: it crosses the school gates, invades the office open-space, and infiltrates even under the sheets at night. For a multitude of people, each day is an invisible battle against stifled laughter, averted glances, bullying and suffocating isolation. Behind the façade of smiles, there are silent screams.

Today, bullying or harassment is no longer a simple playground dispute that is forgotten after the bell rings. Instead, it is a scourge without hours or borders that now invites itself to our family tables through the isolation of a teenager or a loved one.

Consequently, home is no longer a refuge. The office is no longer a place of the future. School has become an anxiety. Harassment has broken down all the barriers of our private lives. Indeed, a notification on a screen is enough to ruin a day, a whisper in a hallway to undermine self-esteem. This constant knot in the throat and the fear of facing others’ eyes are not isolated cases: they are the daily, silent, and destructive ordeal of millions of faces encountered on the street. Ultimately, harassment has become the painful background noise of our modern lives.

Moreover, behind every number and every news item, there are broken lives, trampled self-esteem, and extinguished gazes. It is time to face this monster, understand its mechanisms, and, above all, give a voice back to those whom silence is destroying.

The Downward Spiral: When a “Joke” Becomes a Weapon

“I was just kidding.” “We were joking.” “He/She has no sense of humor.” We’ve all heard these phrases. Too often, they serve as excuses to mask the beginning of hell. But then, at what precise moment do we shift from teasing to harassment?

The trap always closes through three invisible stages:

  • Constant repetition: The daily accumulation of attacks deprives the victim of any respite and destroys their spirit in the long term.
  • Intent to exclude: The goal is to divide, isolate, and dehumanize the target to strip them of their dignity and credibility.
  • Asymmetry of power: The imbalance of power (popularity, numbers, or hierarchy) paralyzes the victim and makes any defense impossible.

Together, it is this toxic combination that creates hell. It is never the violence of a single word that destroys, but the feeling of powerlessness against a machine that never stops.

The Invisible Power of Bystanders: Silence Is Validation

In the equation of harassment, we too often forget a major player. There is not only the harasser and their victim. There are also all those who watch.

The harasser needs an audience to exist. Whether in the hallways of an institution, in the intimacy of a group message thread, or around the office coffee machine, the laughter of others or their indifference is their fuel. This is where our collective responsibility lies because, in the face of harassment, neutrality does not exist:

  • Complicit laughter: A simple “like” under a humiliating comment, a polite smile to avoid drawing attention, or sharing a stolen photo “for laughs.” Without realizing it, the witness becomes an amplifier of pain.
  • Protective silence: Looking away. Lowering one’s head, hoping not to become the next target. Telling oneself, “It’s none of my business.” However, this silence gives the aggressor a green light and leaves the victim with a terrible sense of abandonment.

Fortunately, breaking the vicious cycle doesn’t require becoming a movie hero. It’s enough to refuse to be a passive spectator. Calmly saying, “That’s not funny,” not spreading a rumor, or simply going to see the isolated person afterward to tell them, “I saw, and I’m here for you.” Indeed, it’s this tiny step aside that deprives the bully of their stage and saves lives.

Taking Back Control: Breaking the Cycle of Bullying.

Faced with this destructive machine, there are concrete levers of action, applicable at any age. Above all, no one should have to carry this burden alone.

  • If you are a victim: Do not remain isolated in silence. Cut off contact with the aggressor and document everything (screenshots, emails, dates, facts). This evidence is essential for taking action. Then, talk about it immediately to a trusted person, whether it’s a loved one, an HR representative, or a healthcare professional.
  • If you are a friend or family member, be attentive to subtle signs. A sudden change in behavior, withdrawal, a drop in academic or professional results, or unexplained anxiety when leaving in the morning are alerts. Then, reach out without judgment or minimization.
  • The Helpline: Never hesitate to use free emergency and listening numbers, such as the national helpline 1564 “Embrace” linked to the Ministry of Health. It is a safe space, accessible 24/7 for anyone in extreme psychological distress or a victim of bullying.

Finally, harassment will not stop on its own. It thrives only where silence leaves it room. Therefore, choosing to speak up, to report, or simply to reach out to someone who is drifting away is refusing to let this monster dictate our daily lives.
