There is no stronger base for any society than good values. Therefore, maintaining, honing, and making these values luminous is crucial. Societies need this to develop. They also need this to prevent confusion.
A Mocking Response to a Simple Truth
Two days ago, I tweeted this statement: “Happiness is not in obtaining but more in giving.” Soon after, I received one mocking response. The person said: “We barely have what we need to enable us to keep living. How do you expect us to give?”
I Do Not Blame Her
So, do I judge this person as unhappy, bitter, or ignorant? Do I blame her? On the contrary, I do not. Why? Because most people widely misunderstand the art of giving. Very few actually practice it. Moreover, very little effort goes into educating people on the importance of practicing this value so they can master it.
Virtual Platforms Distort Giving
Furthermore, virtual platforms greatly contribute to distorting many people’s perception of giving. For many, giving only matters when cameras surround them. They prefer a good crowd. They definitely want certificates of appreciation distributed. Otherwise, they think giving is not worth the effort.
Please Do Not Misunderstand Me
Please do not get me wrong. I believe distributing food parcels and money matters. It is an excellent way for society to show support. However, this method of giving mostly happens occasionally. Or it remains limited to a small circle of people.
Giving Goes Beyond Material Possessions
Yet, the value of giving goes far beyond material possessions. In fact, we can bring joy to others’ everyday moments through a simple gesture or a word. That’s all it takes.
We Need to Reconnect with Our Hearts
So, what do we need? We need to reconnect with our hearts.

We have educated minds. But do we have educated hearts?
The Heart Makes Everything Beautiful
Everything can become beautiful if we do it from the heart. Specifically, educated hearts create beauty. For example, a “good morning” sounds pleasing when it comes from the heart. Similarly, a simple smile can light up a room if it is sincere. Likewise, honest appreciation can induce loyalty, give energy to difficult tasks, and produce better results.
It’s About Listening, Not Just Talking
Importantly, this is not about making good conversation. Instead, it’s about listening with appreciation.
Everyone Has Something to Give
Every person has something to give other than material things. Some give their time. Others give their energy. Still others give their understanding, encouragement, and interest. None of these require spending money. Or they only require a minimal amount, like a phone call. After all, we are all hungry for genuine expression and acceptance.
The Reward Makes It Worthwhile
Here is the interesting discovery: the reward you get from giving. It might come instantly. You might feel a nice sense of accomplishment. You might witness an indescribable scene of pleasure. Or the reward can appear in an unexpected form months later.
Money Is Not the Best Gift
So, whatever shape the reward takes, and no matter when it arrives, one significant realization emerges. Giving is not always about money. Of the many things we can give away, money produces the least permanent pleasure. It also backfires on the giver more than other gifts do.
Daily Giving Creates Peace
Therefore, practicing the art of giving on a daily basis creates personal peace. It also creates social peace. Ultimately, we deeply need this peace in our troubled world.
