Joyce Abdallah: Where Cinema Meets the Human Mind

Some careers follow one clear path, while others grow through curiosity, change, and new interests. Joyce Abdallah ’s journey brings together cinema, education, filmmaking, editing, and psychology. For more than 20 years, she has worked across these fields, building a career shaped by creativity and a deep interest in people.

Today, Joyce works as a university instructor, filmmaker, editor, and psychologist. She also founded ReFrame, a space that brings psychology, cinema, films, books, human behavior, and everyday reflections together. Her work reflects one central belief: understanding people can change the way we tell their stories.

Her academic background reflects this connection. She holds a master’s degree in Cinematography and Film Production from Saint Joseph University of Beirut. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Lebanese University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree in Psychology there.

Joyce Abdallah: A Career Shaped by Cinema

Joyce began her professional journey in television and film. In 2004, she started working as a freelance filmmaker and editor, while also gaining experience with major media organizations. She worked as an Assistant Director at Rotana Media Group from 2004 to 2006, then joined Orbit TV Media Production as a TV Director. From 2005 to 2014, this role allowed her to develop strong experience in television production and storytelling.

Later, she joined Lumens Production as an Assistant Director and Editor from 2014 to 2015. Alongside these positions, Joyce continued her freelance work and collaborated with different organizations and creative professionals. Her clients have included UNICEF, SOS, Ricardo Karam, Takreem, Ras Al Khaimah, Baabda Municipality, and Carmen Labaki. Through these experiences, she developed a broad understanding of filmmaking, editing, and visual storytelling.

Teaching Through Film and Storytelling

Since 2009, Joyce has worked as a university instructor at Lebanese University, within the Faculty of Fine Arts and Architecture. She teaches cinema, scriptwriting, editing, advertising, marketing, visual communication, and filmmaking. She also previously taught at Al-Kafaat University, where she worked between 2006 and 2010.

However, Joyce’s approach to teaching goes beyond technical skills. She encourages students to look deeper into every image and story. She asks them to understand the purpose behind a narrative and the emotions behind its characters. At the same time, she helps students turn their ideas into meaningful visual stories while developing their creative and critical thinking.

In 2024, she also joined the Committee for the New Curriculum at CRDP. This role added another dimension to her work in education. Through teaching and curriculum development, she continues to support new ways of thinking about communication, creativity, and visual storytelling.

Joyce Abdallah: Where Psychology Meets Cinema

Alongside her work in cinema, Joyce has developed a strong passion for psychology. She is interested in human behavior, emotional intelligence, personality, and the way emotions influence our actions. Her clinical work allows her to explore these questions more deeply and understand the stories behind people’s behavior.

For Joyce, cinema and psychology naturally belong together. A strong script needs believable characters, and believable characters need depth. Writers must understand emotions, fears, motivations, and personal conflicts to create people who feel real. Likewise, analyzing a film means looking beyond the images and understanding why its characters behave as they do.

The same connection appears in advertising and marketing. Understanding people helps explain how they respond to messages and make choices. Therefore, Joyce sees psychology as an important part of visual communication and storytelling. Her work allows her to explore both sides: the story we create and the person who receives it.

Her studies have strengthened this connection. She completed her bachelor’s degree in Psychology at Lebanese University in 2023. She then continued toward a master’s degree in Psychology. Along the way, she also completed training in CBT, MBCT, art therapy, psychosocial support, NLP, and life coaching.

ReFrame: Seeing Life Through Another Lens

In 2017, Joyce created ReFrame, bringing her interests into one space. The name reflects both sides of her work. In cinema, a frame shapes what we see. In life, reframing can help us see the same situation differently.

Through ReFrame, Joyce explores psychology, cinema, films, books, human behavior, and everyday experiences. She invites people to question their usual way of seeing things. Sometimes, a new perspective can reveal something we could not see before. In the same way, understanding another person can change the way we understand their story.

ReFrame also reflects Joyce’s passion for creativity, empathy, and human connection. Her goal is not simply to provide information. Instead, she creates a space that encourages reflection and deeper understanding. Through this work, she continues to connect the worlds of psychology and storytelling.

Joyce Abdallah: Connecting People, Stories, and Perspectives

Throughout her career, Joyce has moved between several fields without losing sight of what connects them. Television taught her the language of visual storytelling. Filmmaking developed her creative voice, while editing taught her the importance of detail and rhythm. Meanwhile, psychology gave her a deeper understanding of people and their emotions.

Today, these experiences come together in her work as an educator, filmmaker, editor, and psychologist. She brings creativity into psychology and human understanding into cinema. As a result, her work continues to explore the relationship between people and the stories they tell.

Ultimately, Joyce’s journey is about more than combining different careers. It is about looking beyond what appears on the surface. Every image has a story, and every person carries one too. Sometimes, all we need is to change the frame and look again.
