Saudi Arabia’s First Voice in Cultural Sustainability, Jumana Wafa

Saudi Arabia's First Voice in Cultural Sustainability, Jumana Wafa

Jumana Wafa is a Riyadh-based Creative Director and Design Strategist. She engineers national initiatives that synthesize authentic Saudi heritage, high-velocity mass entertainment, and sustainability to achieve Vision 2030 socio-economic targets.

There is a particular silence required to hear history speak.

For Jumana Wafa, it is from this quiet that the Kingdom’s most significant cultural work emerges. As the first woman to speak publicly on cultural sustainability in Saudi Arabia, Jumana Wafa has positioned herself at the delicate intersection where heritage meets horizon, translating mud-brick memory into scalable systems and architectural precision into human experience.

We build iconic experiences, yet too often, the soul gets lost in delivery, she reflects. “I work where culture meets operations, ensuring beauty survives the build.

That ethos now defines a career spanning twelve years, dozens of national initiatives, and a pioneering role in shaping how Saudi Arabia presents itself to the world, and remembers itself for tomorrow.

From the Only Woman in the Room to a National Voice

Trained as an architect, Jumana Wafa began her career as the only female architect in rooms where decisions about Saudi Arabia’s built future were made. It was an education in weight and velocity.

I learned that to build for the future is to balance the weight of history with the ambition of progress, she says. “I operate exactly at this intersection, bridging the delicate gap between authentic heritage and global luxury.”

This work is practical, not just for show. Jumana merges architecture, culture, and strategy with exact technical precision. She turns ideas into reality.
A Pioneering Definition of Sustainability

In 2024, Jumana launched SBN, engineering a complete ESG ecosystem that aligned environmental, social, and economic pillars with strict governance to create the perfect strategy that actually considers the Saudi environment and culture while creating any sort of development strategies.

Recognizing this vision required a more mature market infrastructure to scale, she exited in September 2025. This comprehensive mandate remains the baseline of every strategy she engineers today.

Her work with the Layan Cultural as Culture Development Director saw her democratize access to one of the Kingdom’s most valuable private collections. She authored the strategy for a fully immersive VR museum twin, translating architectural drawings from the vision museum into a globally accessible digital experience. Here, sustainability meant ensuring that cultural memory outlives its physical moment.

For a national heritage commission, Jumana has transformed three kilometers of urban Riyadh into a living timeline across three centuries. Eight monumental sculptures traced the Kingdom’s journey from 1727’s mud-brick foundations to Vision 2030. It was history you could walk through. Twenty-five thousand participants did.

This is Jumana Wafa’s signature: narrative that feels real, environments that hold memory, strategies that outlive trends.

The Neuro-Strategic Framework

Perhaps most significantly, Jumana Wafa has developed what she terms the Neuro-Strategic framework, a design methodology merging cognitive performance research with spatial and experiential design. The premise is radical but intuitive: environments shape behavior. By understanding how the brain processes space, light, materiality, and narrative, Jumana Wafa designs not just for aesthetics but for human outcomes.

During her time working with Rayat, executing a national retail rollout for Intel, she challenged global rigid guidelines by designing “Discovery Cubes”, tactile, rotating puzzles placed at a child’s eye level. A simple ergonomic shift turned static retail displays into moments of awareness and joy. Global headquarters approved the deviation. It rolled out nationwide.

When she designs a visual identity, she utilizes the Golden Ratio. Corporate structures are mathematically tuned to project inevitability.

Operationalizing Heritage & Pop Culture

Jumana translates authentic Saudi heritage into high-yield cultural currency. For national giga-projects, the traditional Najdi door is deconstructed into a scalable, high-end framework for VIP protocols. Sovereign architectural silhouettes are mathematically re-engineered into modern Kufic identities.

She applies identical rigor to mass entertainment.

Directing regional pop-culture media, she engineered “messy opulence” matte-black construction wheelbarrows, custom gold rims, and calculated cash staging.  Even the chaos was calculated, she says. We treated the mess as sculpture engineering.

A Language of Light, Silence, Materiality

Jumana’s structural baseline is defined by Light, Silence, and Materiality. Her environments utilize minimalist, sleek, and curved aesthetics to eliminate visual noise and optimize spatial cognition. This manifests in the precise integration of warm 2700K lighting with authentic Najdi palm wood, and the deep stillness of her photographic work, Ghufran. In her insistence that “some work is loud. Mine isn’t.”

Operating from Riyadh as a Creative Director and Design Strategist, she designs frameworks for the Kingdom’s leading entities. She rejects passing trends to focus on continuity. For her, sustainability means ensuring a concept remains meaningful enough to be inherited. She does not preserve Saudi heritage behind glass. She activates it. Her practice ensures the culture is handed forward functional, intentional, and entirely alive.

Editor’s Note:

What strikes me most about Jumana Wafa’s work is not its scale, though the scale is considerable, but its stillness. In a field that often mistakes noise for impact, she has built a practice defined by listening. To history. To material. To the quiet space between what was and what could be.

This profile attempts to trace the contours of that practice, but some things resist translation. The way she speaks about mud brick as though it carries memory. The precision she brings to a lighting spec and a personal photograph with equal reverence. Her insistence that sustainability is not a certification but a cultural duty.

She said once, “Some work is loud. Mine isn’t.”

This is the work. And it speaks volumes.
