Crafting a New Path: Valerie Berberi, From Corporate Banking to Creative Entrepreneurship

Navigating Career Choices: Beyond Conventional Paths

A career is often perceived as a lifelong commitment to a single job, influenced by societal norms, parental expectations, or the prevailing economic environment. My journey began with studying banking and finance, a popular choice within business management at the time. Graduating with Honors and a Master’s degree, I embarked on a career in corporate banking, excelling in my roles and consistently exceeding targets. I believed this was my destined path—an endless climb up the corporate ladder, unaware of what lay on the “Other Side.” Then, the Covid-19 pandemic struck, changing everything.

Rediscovering a Hidden Talent: The Birth of Buttercream Cake Design

During the pandemic, with increased time at home and rising financial pressures, I revisited a long-neglected talent—my background in the arts. Equipped with business analysis proficiency, financial modeling skills, and a love for creativity, I decided to pivot my career. With the support of my family, I founded Buttercream Cake Design business, where I combine my artistic background with my business acumen. Each cake I create is a personal expression of my vision, crafted with care and attention to detail.

Crafting a Unique Business: The Importance of Customer Service and Personal Touch

Though my business is small, it is deeply personal, with each cake tailor-made to meet the specific desires of my clients. I believe that exceptional customer service is key to distinguishing oneself in the market. By eliminating any room for doubt in the client’s experience, even when mistakes occur, I strive to be an artist, problem solver, and businesswoman all at once

Embracing the Challenges of Entrepreneurship: A New Way of Working

The transition from being a bank employee to owning a small business was challenging, both physically and emotionally. The familiar struggles of corporate life, such as vying for recognition and advancement, were replaced by the demands of entrepreneurship—long hours, sacrifices of family time, and working through holidays. Setting priorities and knowing when to take a break became essential.

Empowerment through Change: The Value of Recognizing Your Talents

Leaving a once-thriving career due to industry decline was difficult, but I believe this change was inevitable. The important lesson I’ve learned is to recognize your talents when they emerge and to arm yourself with solid business and communication skills to elevate your ventures. I am grateful to be part of an era where women in business can excel and surpass their potential. I’ve learned to face challenges with grace and embrace the unknown with confidence.
