‘’JEEN’’
Just an Opinion… “The Last Page of the Book”
“The novel is a work of fiction and bears no relation to reality, regardless of how similar the events may be to any place on Earth.”
I am neither a scientist not a researcher in criminal sciences, but the nature of recent crimes, with their increasing ferocity and grotesqueness, has become alarmingly concerning. Such crimes are committed by individuals who exhibit a lack of humane characteristics during the act. We witness cases where individuals decapitate their spouses and parade the heads through the streets, murder their own family members, kill their children, or even massacre groups of students in schools, among other horrifying stories that defy human logic and sensibility.
Exploring the Genetic Roots of Violent Behavior: Insights and Implications
To understand this troubling phenomenon in societies, and through my readings, I have delved into research on the role of genes in the criminal behavior of serial killers and criminals since 1965, and perhaps even earlier. This research focuses on the role of the violence gene in a killer’s behavior and propensity to commit crimes. I am not here to assign full or partial responsibility for the crime to the killer, despite several courts in countries such as the United States, Italy, and the Netherlands recognizing these research findings as forensic evidence used in judgments.
These findings have influenced judicial decisions, ranging from death sentences and life imprisonment to early releases after a few years. Additionally, some have directed these cases to scientific centers for further study of the phenomenon, which has been spreading recently and causing widespread fear. The research examines the genetic factors contributing to the development and proliferation of the violence gene, as well as the biological role in the emergence of criminal and aggressive behavior, which is genetically more prevalent among males than females due to the role of chromosomes in transferring this gene.
As there are studies confirming the existence of syndromes such as autism and Down syndrome that affect children’s behavior, there is also a syndrome of violence associated with the MAO A gene. Some of this syndrome develops in conjunction with certain antidepressants or drugs, which can have adverse effects on mental health. It can also evolve based on environmental and situational factors, revealing the gene’s aggressive tendencies, thus fully controlling the behavior of the violent criminal.
Proactive Measures for Addressing Genetic Predispositions to Violence
I am not presenting this issue from a legal or humanitarian perspective, but from a standpoint of caution and foresight for the future of our societies to reduce crime and the number of victims of aggression and violence. For instance:
. Our societies have reached a good level of awareness and culture. Could we adopt the idea of genetic screening similar to thalassemia testing, and study the gene’s trajectory to prevent its development?
. Is it possible to study a child’s predisposition to inherit this gene before birth and implement comprehensive solutions and follow-up plans for confirmed carriers of the violence gene, including a timeline and evaluation?
. Can we alter the trajectory of potential criminals and treat the effects of these genes to reduce the number of their future victims? Is it possible to harness science to serve humanity from a medical perspective?
Conclusion
In light of the increasing brutality of recent crimes and the disturbing patterns observed, it is crucial to explore the potential role of genetics in criminal behavior. Research into the violence gene and its implications highlights a need for further investigation and preventive measures. By considering genetic screening, studying predispositions before birth, and developing interventions for those carrying such genes, we may mitigate future criminal behavior and reduce violence. Harnessing scientific advancements to better understand and address these genetic factors could significantly enhance our efforts to prevent crime and protect our communities.
