The Loneliness Epidemic Among Men in the Middle East – By Dr. Zeina Ghossoub

المقدمة

Loneliness is often called a “silent epidemic,” and it does not spare any region, including the Middle East. A recent global survey by Gallup found that 23% of people worldwide said they felt lonely “a lot of the day yesterday”. While much attention has focused on loneliness among men in Western societies, men across the Middle East face similar struggles amid unique social and cultural pressures. This article explores the issue of male loneliness in the Middle East through recent statistics, expert insights, regional factors, and emerging initiatives aimed at addressing the problem.

Loneliness by the Numbers

Loneliness can be difficult to quantify, but available data indicate it is widespread. In the Middle East and North Africa, feelings of isolation often accompany broader mental health challenges. For example, roughly 29% of people in the region say they suffer from depression, a condition closely linked with loneliness. Stress rates are also high, suggesting that many are struggling with emotional well-being. Men often underreport emotional difficulties, and suicide rates are higher among men than women, indicating a silent mental health burden.

Social and Cultural Factors Behind Male Loneliness

Social norms discourage emotional openness among men, encouraging stoicism and independence. This prevents many from forming deep emotional bonds or seeking help. In addition, while family ties in the Middle East can provide support, not everyone has access to supportive relationships. Expatriates and migrants, especially in the Gulf, experience profound loneliness due to separation from family and limited social networks. Economic pressures and conflict-related displacement also exacerbate feelings of disconnection and isolation.

Breaking the Silence: Emerging Attitudes and Initiatives

There are encouraging signs of progress. Public campaigns such as Qatar’s ‘It’s OK not to be OK’ are breaking taboos around mental health. Saudi Arabia has launched digital mental health platforms and established a national center to promote psychological support. Community-led initiatives, peer groups, and symbolic projects like Qatar’s ‘Friendship Benches’ are also helping normalize conversations about mental well-being. Religious leaders and educators are increasingly endorsing mental health awareness, which plays a crucial role in shifting cultural perceptions.

الخاتمة

Loneliness among men in the Middle East is rooted in complex social and cultural dynamics. But societal attitudes are shifting, and men are increasingly willing to seek support. Public health campaigns, digital tools, and grassroots movements are helping to reduce the stigma around mental health. The combination of traditional values and modern awareness is laying the groundwork for a more supportive environment where men can thrive emotionally, without shame or silence.
